1 Koffer Kunst
1 Koffer Kunst begins its activity with a group show of the same name (1 Suitcase of art) with artists from Turin. The artist Nele Waldert and the landscape-architect Markus Loh host the exhibition in their house.
1 Koffer Kunst displays in Düsseldorf for the first time works by: Ada Mascolo (Turin, 1970), Andrea Massaioli (Turin, 1960), Enrico Tealdi (Cuneo, 1976) and Gosia Turzeniecka (Opoczno, Poland, 1974). All artists are professionaly or personally connected to the italian city of Turin.
For this first exhibition I have actually put in my suitcase a selection of works by the above mentioned artists and I have brought them here in Düsseldorf, where I currently live, in order to present to the German public a slice of Italian contemporary art.
1 Koffer Kunst is a clear homage to Marcel Duchamp's Boîte-en-valise, a series of suitcases that he made from 1936 and containing his artworks miniatures. A reflection on art reproducibility and an attempt to make it more accessible and transportable.
But it also recalls the immigration stories of yesterday and today, which in Italian collective memory are still symbolized by the cartboard suitcase (la valigia di cartone).
The suitcase evokes travel and mobility, flexibility and possibility, but also lightness and versatility: only one suitcase to move without burdens. This is precisely the attitude of a free and lively structure as 1 KoK aims to be.
